Bank Executive Business Outlook Survey: Perceived Threat Level
Promontory Interfinancial Network's Q1 2018 Bank Executive Business Outlook Survey asked the following question: Goldman Sachs launched its new online personal loan plaform (Marcus) in October 2016. Now, Amazon is in talks with J.P. Morgan to offer bank accounts. On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, rank the threat to your bank from each of the following entities.
A whopping 62% of leaders, or nearly 2 in 3 banks, perceive Amazon as a level 4 or 5 (top) disruptor.
Additionally, more than a third feel pressure from the nation's largest banks and about 8 and 10 worry about competition from fintech companies. Clearly, banks are under attack on multiple fronts.
Note that the number of bank executives giving Amazon the highest threat-level rating was roughly 2.5x the number who assigned the same rating to fintechs and the nation's largest banks and about 8.5x the number who assigned that rating to Goldman Sachs.
